PDI-P undecided on Tarmidi case

JAKARTA: A meeting of the central board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) failed to decide on the sanctions for Tarmidi Soehardjo, the chairman of the party's faction at City Council who rejected the President's order to support Governor Sutiyoso in the recent election.

"Because our chairwoman was absent, we did not discuss the issue," the deputy secretary-general of the party, Pramono Anung, said after the meeting on Tuesday.

Not only did Tarmidi refuse to support Sutiyoso, but he also nominated himself as a gubernatorial candidate. Tarmidi secured 13 votes, while Sutiyoso won the race with 47 votes.

Tarmidi had strongly rejected the election results, which were marred by vote-buying allegations, but later accepted them. --JP
