PDI-P to Inaugurate Kudatuli Monument on Monday

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) will inaugurate the Kudatuli Monument on Monday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 27 July Incident, also known as Kudatuli.

“At 1 p.m. Western Indonesian Time, the PDI-P Central Executive Board invites all pro-democracy figures and civil society members to attend the inauguration of the Kudatuli Monument by Ibu Megawati Soekarnoputri,” said PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto in Central Jakarta on Sunday.

The inauguration will be held at the PDI-P Central Executive Board office on Jalan Diponegoro Number 58, Menteng, Central Jakarta, coinciding with the 30th anniversary commemoration of the Kudatuli incident.

He stated that the Kudatuli monument will depict the life and movement of PDI-P under the leadership of Megawati Soekarnoputri in upholding democracy and the sovereignty of the people.

“Even the most remote voices must be heard so that political decisions truly liberate those who are still colonised by various economic shackles and other forms of subjugation,” he said.

On Sunday, PDI-P held a theatrical performance themed “30 Years of Kudatuli,” which portrayed the storming of the PDI headquarters on 27 July 1996 by supporters of Soerjadi’s PDI faction, backed by the New Order regime, against Megawati Soekarnoputri’s supporters.

Following the performance, the event continued with a national cleansing procession led by the indigenous community of Kasepuhan Cisungsang, Banten Kidul. The ritual was held as a symbol of spiritual purification, preserving collective memory, and offering prayers for the victims who died in the incident. The procession concluded with a traditional Ngarengkong art performance presented by the indigenous community of Kasepuhan Cilebang. At the peak of the event, artist Butet Kartaredjasa recited a poem titled “Melawan dan Berjuang” (Resisting and Struggling).
