PDI-P Stages Theatrical Performance Commemorating 30 Years Since Kudatuli, Hasto Highlights Dark Evidence of New Order

PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto stated that the Kudatuli incident of 27 July 1996 serves as evidence of the repressive use of power during the New Order. He described the action as an attempt to silence democracy and the voices of dissenting citizens. ‘What happened at that time was terrible; the authoritarian New Order regime tried to kill democracy, extinguish humanity, and bury justice,’ Hasto said at the event. Meanwhile, the Head of the PDI-P History Agency, Bonnie Triyana, said the theatrical performance was not intended to reopen old wounds. ‘We are not here to reopen wounds, but to ensure that the wound is never forgotten,’ Bonnie stated. He added that the performance was not merely art, but an effort to recreate a time when violence was used against the opposition, helping people feel what documents cannot express. Bonnie noted that although the event occurred on 27 July 1996, the historical wound cannot be forgotten as long as justice has not been fully served.
