PDI-P Jogja Holds Free Health Checks for Elderly, Eko Suwanto Pushes for Increase in Elderly Social Security
The Jogja City Branch Executive Board (DPC) of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) held a social service event providing free health examinations for the elderly. During the occasion, the Chairman of the PDI Perjuangan Jogja City DPC, Eko Suwanto, urged the regional government to increase the budget for the elderly social security scheme (JSLU).
This free health examination activity for the elderly is part of a series of events commemorating the 1996 Kudatuli incident. Eko stated that the entire series of events was designed to implement PDI Perjuangan’s commitment to carrying out its national political ideology, which is to always be among the people.
"PDI Perjuangan’s commitment to ensuring the health of the elderly is carried out through free health examinations. We also provide support so that the elderly social security scheme from the DIY Regional Government can have a good budget allocation," Eko explained in a written statement on Sunday (26/7/2026).
The Free Elderly Health Examination Social Service was held at Legawong Park, Umbulharjo. Eko referred to this social service as part of the series of events for the Commemoration of the 1996 Kudatuli Incident. According to Eko, the dark event 30 years ago needs to be commemorated because it became a milestone in the history of PDI Perjuangan’s political struggle against the authoritarian regime. Eko wants all PDI Perjuangan cadres to understand its ideology by implementing activities for the community.
"Around 8,000 elderly people received assistance. In addition, we built preparedness through the Disaster Management Agency with a simulation of rescuing victims in the Gajah Wong River. We also planted 300 trees, including jackfruit trees and various other fruit plants," he explained. "The peak of the commemoration on 27 July will be filled with Reflection and Joint Prayer. Then on 29 July 2026, a Talk Show themed Democracy and Human Rights will be held," Eko added.
In addition to various social activities, PDI Perjuangan Jogja City also held the Inauguration of branch, body, and party wing officials throughout Jogja City. On this occasion, Eko inaugurated the branch management for the 2025-2030 period, while also swearing in the officials of Taruna Merah Putih, Baitul Muslimin, and Baguna Jogja City. The procession was marked by the planting of jackfruit tree seedlings in the Legawong Park area as a symbol of commitment to preserving the environment.
"All are one voice, solidly looking after each other, moving in one direction, fighting to realise the people’s welfare," Eko asserted.
The Chairman of the PDI Perjuangan DIY Regional Executive Board (DPD), Nuryadi, added that this cadre inauguration serves as the first consolidation following the regional head elections. It is known that for the first time, Jogja City is led by a mayor and deputy mayor from PDI Perjuangan. "This is a good thing that we must continue going forward. How the DPC down to the branches work well to convey the party’s good goals to the community. Branch officials must continue to be united and move together," said Nuryadi.
The inauguration was also attended by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Jogja, Hasto Wardoyo and Wawan Harmawan. Hasto emphasised that care for the environment is a value continuously stressed by the Chairperson of PDI Perjuangan, Megawati Soekarnoputri. "We must be pro-environment, care about looking after water and life. Programmes must also touch the needs of the common people. We are present to accompany the community and defend the weak," Hasto added.
