JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Hasto Kristiyanto, highlighted the extensive experience of Megawati Soekarnoputri during her time as Indonesia’s fifth president in the past.

This is because, in the meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Palace on Thursday (19/3/2026) afternoon, they discussed strategic matters concerning national and state issues, as well as various geopolitical problems.

“Mother Megawati’s very extensive experience, especially as Indonesia’s fifth president who was able to resolve multidimensional crises, including various policy approaches that always emphasised the importance of a sense of priority and sense of urgency, was one of the things discussed in that meeting,” Hasto told Kompas.com on Thursday (19/3/2026).

Hasto affirmed that Indonesia possesses a spirit of gotong royong, so meetings between national leaders are aimed at the interests of the people, nation, and state.

In addition, he said, Prabowo and Megawati also met in the context of national culture, namely to engage in dialogue and deliberation with each other.

“On that very good occasion, Mother Megawati also recounted her most recent visit to the UAE and Saudi Arabia,” Hasto added.

“On the 29th day of the month of Ramadan ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 H, I received Indonesia’s fifth president, Mother Hj. Megawati Soekarnoputri, at Merdeka Palace,” Prabowo stated in his post.

Prabowo said that this meeting with Megawati was an occasion for maintaining ties.

“This meeting continues the rapport among national leaders,” he said.

A moment of closeness was evident when Prabowo received Megawati’s arrival. That moment of familiarity was clearly visible when Prabowo held Megawati’s hand as she entered Merdeka Palace.
