PDI-P Forms Team to Evaluate Electoral Law Ahead of 2029 Elections

JAKARTA — The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has formed a special team to evaluate the 2017 Electoral Law (Law No. 7) and prepare for the 2029 elections. This was stated by PDI-P Central Executive Board Chairman Andreas Hugo Pareira in response to queries regarding the House of Representatives’ lack of progress on the Electoral Bill. “At PDI-P, we have already formed a team to evaluate the Electoral Law and prepare for the 2029 elections,” Andreas said following a Technical Guidance session for PDI-P Regional House of Representatives members across Indonesia in Jakarta on Saturday (30 May 2026). The party with the bull emblem continues to closely monitor developments in the House of Representatives regarding the revision of the law. “What’s key now is that the House of Representatives is discussing the Electoral Law, as it serves as the entry point for our preparations for 2029,” Andreas said. “It’s under Commission II, but I understand it will now be the government’s initiative,” he concluded. House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani stated that communications regarding the Electoral Law revision continue within political parties, despite no formal parliamentary discussions yet. “The Electoral Bill has a specific timeframe. Political communications continue within parties and are not held behind closed doors,” Puan said at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21 April 2026). Puan stressed that political communications regarding the Electoral Law revision take place through various channels, both formal and informal. “They must proceed smoothly, maintaining democratic spirit without detriment to the nation and state,” Puan said. Similarly, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad urged all parties to exercise patience and avoid rushing the revision of the Electoral Law.
