PDI-P Faction Supports Domestic Workers Protection Bill: Halt Unlimited Working Hours for Domestic Workers
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction has affirmed the necessity of work hour limits for domestic workers (PRT) in Indonesia. Regulations limiting working hours for PRT are expected to be realised through the introduction of the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (RUU PPRT). “The PDI Perjuangan faction emphasises that this bill must halt the practice of unlimited or borderless working hours,” stated Banyu Biru Djarot, a member of the Legislation Body (Baleg) from the PDI-P faction, during the Level I discussion meeting on the RUU PPRT on Monday evening (20/4/2026). “(They should receive) daily and weekly rest time, as well as rights to leave for illness, maternity, and family matters,” Djarot added. He stated that the state must not tolerate extreme fatigue practices that threaten the health and safety of domestic workers. In addition, the PDI-P faction requested that the government ensure domestic workers receive health and employment guarantees. “The government must also adjust the National Social Economic Single Data (DTSEN) so that the formalisation of the PRT profession does not automatically nullify their family’s rights to social assistance or state aid,” Djarot said. Before the Level I decision-making, Labour Minister Yassierli emphasised that domestic workers must receive fair wages. “Domestic workers must obtain fair wage guarantees, working hours and rest time, rights to holidays and leave, protection from discrimination, sexual violence, as well as occupational safety and health guarantees,” during the RUU PPRT discussion meeting with the House of Representatives’ Legislation Body (Baleg), on Monday afternoon (20/4/2026). The presence of the RUU PPRT, which is planned to be enacted as a law on Tuesday (21/4/2026), will serve as the legal umbrella for domestic workers to obtain their rights. The RUU PPRT is crucial to ensure that PRT receive rights equal to other workers.
