PDI-P determines sole candidate

MEDAN, North Sumatra: After months of internal dispute in the
provincial council here, the Indonesian Democratic Party of
Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) finally decided on Wednesday to submit
Achmad Azhari as its sole candidate as council speaker.

The election of a new speaker is slated for Thursday.

Continuous arguments within the legislative council were
triggered by PDI Perjuangan's persistence in naming two
candidates, while other factions only named one.

Besides Achmad, Golkar faction's Junus Harahap, the United
Development Party faction's Hazrul Azwar and Military/Police
faction's Bachtiar Bonar Sirait were also proposed as candidates.
