PDI-P Condemns Acid Attack on Human Rights Activist Andrie Yunus
JAKARTA — Ronny Talapessy, Head of Legal Affairs and Advocacy at the Central Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), has strongly condemned the acid attack by an unknown assailant against Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras).
“The PDI-P strongly condemns the act of violence in the form of an acid attack against Deputy Coordinator of Kontras, Andrie Yunus,” Ronny stated on Friday, 13 March 2026.
Ronny expressed the PDI-P’s empathy regarding the incident that befell Yunus. He assessed that the incident adds to the lengthening list of attacks and terror targeting those who have been voicing criticism and advocating for human rights.
The PDI-P urged the administration of President Prabowo Subianto and law enforcement authorities to take firm and serious steps in enforcing the law.
“To apprehend the perpetrators of the attack against Andrie Yunus and thoroughly investigate the series of terror that has recently been experienced by citizens expressing critical opinions,” Ronny said.
According to him, attacks and terror against critical voices are not only unlawful but also constitute a denial of democracy, the constitution, and the nation’s ideals of independence.
“This incident has also contradicted President Prabowo’s vision placed first in the Asta Cita,” Ronny remarked.
The vision concerns efforts to strengthen Pancasila ideology, democracy, and human rights, as well as to strengthen political and legal reform.
Yunus was doused with acid in the Salemba area of Central Jakarta on Thursday evening, 13 March 2026, after he had recorded a podcast at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) entitled “Remilitarisation and Judicial Review in Indonesia”. Yunus suffered 24 per cent burn injuries from the attack.
