PDI-P Claims Numerous Qualified Female Cadres for Legislative Seats

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - PDI-P claims to have prepared numerous qualified female cadres to meet the 30% quota for female legislative candidates in each electoral district as per the Constitutional Court’s ruling.

PDI-P spokesperson Guntur Romli stated that the party is not only focused on meeting the administrative requirements for female representation but is also preparing cadres through the cadre development process.

“For us, it is not just about preparing 30% female candidates; we will provide the best female candidates through the party’s cadre development process,” Guntur told Kompas.com on Wednesday (27 May 2026).

Guntur also emphasised that PDI-P respects the Constitutional Court’s ruling regarding the mandatory 30% female representation in legislative candidacies.

According to him, the court’s decision is final and binding, so all political parties participating in the election must comply.

“The Constitutional Court’s decision is final and binding for PDI-P. And PDI-P is ready to implement it as a form of obedience to the Constitution,” Guntur said.

The ruling was read by Constitutional Court Chief Justice Suhartoyo on Monday (25 May 2026).

In its ruling, the Constitutional Court stated that Article 245 of Law No. 7 of 2017 on Elections is unconstitutional insofar as it does not stipulate that the General Election Commission can disqualify political parties that fail to meet the female representation requirement.

Constitutional Court Justice Adies Kadir said that the reinforcement of sanctions is necessary to reduce discrimination against female representation in the House of Representatives and Regional Houses of Representatives.

“This clarification is needed to realise the principle of popular sovereignty in fair electoral contests, so efforts to reduce discrimination in the number of female representatives in the House of Representatives and Regional Houses of Representatives can be made,” said Adies.
