PDI-P Calls for Accelerated Election Law Revisions to Avoid Last-Minute Rush
Jakarta, KOMPAS.com - PDI-P Central Executive Board (DPP) Chairman Ganjar Pranowo has stated that the revision of the Election Law (UU Pemilu) must be accelerated by the House of Representatives (DPR RI) to prevent a rushed process as the next election approaches.
Ganjar noted that the longer the revision process is delayed, the less time will be available to complete necessary adjustments.
“Yesterday, the DPR leadership stated they wanted to draft a quality law without rushing. Okay, we don’t want to rush, but we must discuss it much faster. Precisely because the deadline is approaching, it will become more rushed. Let’s discuss it now,” Ganjar said during an interview at the PDI-P Party School in Jakarta on Monday, 1 June 2026.
Moreover, Ganjar added, several adjustments are needed following various Constitutional Court rulings on the electoral system.
Ganjar believes delays in discussions could lead to new issues, as many aspects require agreement among political parties.
“What we need now is to accelerate the processing and discussion of the Election Law package to avoid delays,” Ganjar explained.
He said PDI-P views time constraints as a major challenge in revising the Election Law.
He stressed that early political communication and lobbying among parties are necessary to prevent obstacles when formal discussions begin in the DPR.
Ganjar is confident that potential issues can be anticipated if political communication is expedited.
“If lobbying can be done more quickly, hopefully there will be no issues later. But if discussions drag on or there’s no agenda at all, it will be dangerous for preparing the next bill,” he concluded.
Previously reported, the Election Law revision has not yet entered formal discussions in the DPR despite being included in the National Legislation Programme (Prolegnas) for a long time.
“Regarding the Election Bill, there is indeed a time limit. Political communications within parties continue, and they are not conducted in secrecy,” Puan said at the Parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.
