PC shipments to RI dive

BANGKOK (DPA): Shipments of PCs (Personal Computers) to Thailand, Indonesia and South Korea -- the three Asian countries that had to appeal to the International Monetary Fund for bail- outs last year -- fell dramatically in the first quarter of 1998, news reports said yesterday.

Indonesia's PC imports this year as of the end of March were 21,000 units, an 80 percent decline from the same period last year; Thailand's were 42,000 units, or a 50 percent drop; and South Korea's were 281,000 units, a 39 per cent decline, said the Bangkok Post newspaper.

The article was based on a recent survey compiled by the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Altogether PC shipments to Asia reached 2.3 million units last quarter, down 13 percent from fourth quarter sales in 1997, said the IDC.
