PBNU Will Not Precede Government, Determination of 1 Syawal Awaits Isbat Session

JAKARTA - The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), through its Lembaga Falakiyah, has stated that the determination of the start of Syawal 1447 Hijriah will await the results of the Isbat session held by the Republic of Indonesia Government.

The Isbat session to determine 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah or Eid al-Fitr 2026 will take place at the Auditorium HM Rasjidi, Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs RI, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (19/3/2026).

“PBNU will submit a sighting report, but ethically, it will still wait for the results of the Isbat session organised by the Republic of Indonesia Government,” said Marufin.

If there are reports of the hilal being sighted, PBNU will wait for the government’s argumentation in the Isbat session before submitting its report.

“Conversely, if the hilal is not sighted, there will be no push for completing Ramadan. Thus, 1 Syawal is estimated to fall on Saturday, 21 March 2026, starting from Saturday night,” he explained.

The most crucial point is that Nahdlatul Ulama hopes the government, particularly the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, will remain consistent in using the MABIMS criteria.
