A shooting at a mosque complex in the San Diego area, California, United States, left three civilians dead. The PBNU strongly condemned the incident.

“We strongly condemn the shooting at the mosque complex in San Diego that killed a number of civilians,” said Ahmad Fahrur Rozi, chairman of PBNU’s Religious Affairs, also known as Gus Fahrur, to reporters on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

He said places of worship should be safe spaces for all adherents, not targets of hatred and violence. He added that the shooting incident is evidence that Islamophobia remains.

“This incident serves as a reminder that Islamophobia and hatred-based extremism still exist and are real; this must be fought together through law enforcement, education on tolerance, and strengthening interfaith dialogue,” Fahrur said.

Fahrur prayed that the victims would find the best place, that their families be given strength, and that such incidents would not recur anywhere, whether against Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, or any other religious groups.

“We extend our condolences and prayers to the victims and to the Muslim community there. May they be granted patience and safety by Allah SWT,” he added.

Earlier reports, as cited by AFP, Tuesday, 19 May, noted that emergency responders found the victims outside the Islamic Center of San Diego. The perpetrators, aged 19 and 17, were also found dead.

Television footage from a helicopter showed armed emergency responders gathered outside a building. An unidentified person lay on the ground with a pool of blood.

Police said a security guard at the mosque complex was among the three people killed.
