The Chairman of PBNU, Ulil Abshar Abdalla, explained that the NU’s lunar observation team had conducted observations in several locations in Java, namely Lamongan, Sidoarjo and Kudus. PBNU stated that it had successfully observed the new moon at these three locations, so the age of the month of Dzulqadah was determined to be only 29 days.

Thus, PBNU announced that the beginning of the month of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri will fall on Monday, May 18, 2026. Meanwhile, Eid al-Adha will fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

“With this, the Central Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama hereby announces that the beginning of the month of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri falls on Monday Kliwon, May 18, 2026, and Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri falls on Wednesday Wage, May 27, 2026,” said Ulil in a YouTube broadcast of NU, Sunday (May 17, 2026).

Previously, a member of the Falakiyah Institute (LF) of PBNU, Hendro Setyanto, encouraged the government to confirm that the first day of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri would be on Monday, May 18, 2026. Even if the new moon is not visible, NU applies the principle of nafyul ikmal, so that the first day of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri will also coincide with Monday, May 18, 2026.

“If there are reports of the sighting of the new moon, Nahdlatul Ulama encourages the government of the Republic of Indonesia, in this case the Ministry of Religious Affairs, to confirm that the first day of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri coincides with Monday Kliwon, May 18, 2026. If the new moon is not visible, NU encourages the Indonesian government to apply nafyul ikmal, so that the first day of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri also coincides with Monday Kliwon, May 18, 2026,” said Hendro at a seminar session on the determination of the new moon at the Ministry of Religious Affairs building, Jakarta, Sunday (May 17).

It is known that the government officially set the beginning of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri on May 17, 2026. Thus, Eid al-Adha on the 10th of Zulhijjah 1447 H will fall on Wednesday, May 27.

The determination session for the first day of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri was held at the HM Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religious Affairs office, Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, Sunday (May 17). The Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, led the determination session.

“Thus, based on the results of calculations and reports that the new moon can be seen, it was agreed that the date of the first day of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri falls on Monday, May 18, 2026. And thus Eid al-Adha on the 10th of Zulhijjah 1447 Hijri falls on Wednesday, May 27, 2026,” said the Minister.
