JAKARTA - The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) and the Archdiocese of Jakarta have agreed to establish a Social Resilience Movement. This step serves as a response to the increasing impacts of global conflicts felt by communities in various countries, including Indonesia. “This is a collective movement to encourage all segments of society to develop capacities for mutual assistance, strengthen solidarity, and promote gotong royong right down to the grassroots level,” said Gus Yahya in his statement, as reported by Antara on Saturday (11/4/2026). He added that PBNU will optimise its institutional networks, including charitable bodies and social movement units such as Lazisnu and GKMNU, to support the programme’s implementation, which also embodies the spirit of Ta’awun Ijtima’i. Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo welcomed the initiative warmly. He noted that the concept of social resilience has recently become a focus of internal discussions within the Archdiocese of Jakarta. “We also feel deeply concerned. In recent times, we have discussed it intensively internally. We feel called to participate in every initiative aimed at helping grassroots communities,” he said. The Cardinal is also prepared to communicate with church leaders to follow up and support this initiative. Prior to visiting the Archdiocese of Jakarta, PBNU had met with ambassadors from friendly countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, the United States, and others. Those visits discussed the impacts of global conflicts, particularly on grassroots communities.
