PB Semmi Backs Police Corruption Probe, Warns Against Intervention

The Executive Board of the Indonesian Muslim Students Union (PB SEMMI) has expressed full support for the National Police’s Corruption Eradication Corps (Kortas Tipikor) in uncovering three suspected corruption cases. PB SEMMI warned that no one should be allowed to intervene in this law enforcement process.

“Every state institution has its own duties. If there is a search, examination, or seizure process, let it proceed according to the law. There must be no intervention, no pressure, and no attempts to steer public opinion to weaken the officers doing their work. The state must show that the law is higher than any position,” said PB SEMMI Chairman Bintang Wahyu Saputra to reporters on Thursday (9/7/2026).

Bintang supports Kortas Tipikor Polri in thoroughly uncovering these cases. He stated that the perpetrators must be held accountable before the law. “Do not stop at the small players. Uncover it down to its roots. The public wants to see the state’s courage, not a charade. If there is wrongdoing, process it. If not, explain it openly. Most importantly, no one should be immune to the law,” he said.

Bintang added that PB SEMMI will continue to oversee the anti-corruption agenda as part of its commitment to safeguarding reform and strengthening the rule of law. He stressed that the steps taken by Kortas Tipikor Polri must be fully supported. “We stand with the efforts to eradicate corruption. Do not let any force obscure the legal process. Indonesia needs officers who are brave, independent, and unafraid to face anyone, so that public trust in the state grows stronger,” he said.

As is known, police searched a cafe in Cipete, South Jakarta, yesterday. The search was related to several cases. Polda Metro Jaya Head of Public Relations, Commissioner Budhi Hermanto, said the search was conducted jointly with Kortas Tipikor Polri. The cases are under the attention of President Prabowo Subianto.

“This is related to alleged corruption in the PLN coal blackout, ASABRI, and Krakatau Steel. This is the President’s attention for these alleged corruption cases to be a focus for the Police to conduct disclosure and investigation processes,” said Budhi in Cipete, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (8/7).

Head of Kortas Tipikor Polri, Inspector General Totok Suharyanto, mentioned that this case is being handled jointly, or as a joint investigation, with the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of Polda Metro Jaya. He said the cases relate to alleged corruption in coal procurement that triggered a blackout, the ASABRI case, and the debt settlement case from PT CBS to PT KNI, a subsidiary of the state-owned enterprise Krakatau Steel.

“Currently, Kortas Polri is implementing a joint investigation scheme with the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of Polda Metro Jaya in handling corruption and money laundering cases in the legal handling of the PLN coal case, then ASABRI from 2020 to 2025, and the alleged corruption case in the debt settlement process of PT CBS to PT KNI from 2020-2025,” he said.

Director of Special Criminal Investigation for Polda Metro Jaya, Commissioner Victor Dean Mackbon, then provided an explanation regarding two objects of the case. He said the search was related to alleged corruption and money laundering in the legal handling process by individual state officials or state administrators in the PT ASABRI and Jiwasraya cases.

“The first is the alleged criminal act of corruption and or money laundering in the legal handling process by individual civil servants or state administrators in the PT ASABRI (Persero) and or Asuransi Jiwasraya case that occurred within the jurisdiction of Polda Metro Jaya during the period from 2020 to 2025,” he said.

The second case relates to alleged corruption and money laundering in a debt settlement. He has not yet explained who the suspects are in these cases.

Police are investigating the cases under Article 12 letter e and/or Article 12 letter b of the Corruption Eradication Law and/or Article 606 paragraph 1 and/or paragraph 3, Article 3 and Article 5 of the Money Laundering Law or Article 607 paragraph 1 in conjunction with Article 607 paragraph 1 in conjunction with Article 20 of the Criminal Code. For information, Article 12 e of the Corruption Law relates to extortion and Article 12 b relates to bribery.

Polda Metro Jaya Head of Public Relations, Commissioner Budhi Hermanto, confirmed that the investigation into the alleged corruption cases at PLN, Asabri, and Krakatau Steel is under the attention of President Prabowo Subianto. “This is the President’s attention for these alleged corruption cases to be a focus for the police to carry out disclosure and investigation processes. This series of searches is part of the investigation process in seeking and collecting evidence to fulfil the investigation process,” said Budhi Hermanto after the search at Cafe de’Clan, Cipete, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (8/7).

Budhi said the search is part of uncovering alleged coal corruption at PLN that triggered a blackout in Sumatra some time ago, as well as the ASABRI and Krakatau Steel cases. The corruption cases under investigation include bribery, gratification, and money laundering. “Kortas Tipikor together with Polda Metro Jaya are conducting investigations into alleged corruption cases including bribery, gratification, and money laundering. Several locations are currently being searched simultaneously, including the current location at Cafe de’Clan and Coin Money Changer. This is related to the alleged corruption in the PLN coal blackout, ASABRI, and Krakatau Steel,” he said.
