The Central Board of the Ikatan Alumni Pergerakan Mahasiswa Islam Indonesia (PB IKA PMII) in conjunction with Lembaga Amal Zakat Gerak Kita Indonesia (LAZ Gerakin) again organised the Sahur On The Road (SOTR) programme titled Jakarta Berbagi Sahur on Saturday, 28 February.

The activity targeted informal sector workers and underprivileged communities along the major streets of Jakarta, ranging from online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol), street cart operators, to bedug drummers who still faithfully wake residents during early morning hours.

Radim Okto Fudin, the SOTR coordinator at LAZ Gerakin, stressed that this social action had been carefully prepared through direct field observation. “Over these three days we conducted investigation and observation about sahur activities for motorcycle taxi drivers, poor urban communities, and street cart operators. So our target this morning was 900 people. However, in the field there are still many who need assistance,” Radim said.

He added that the observation-based approach was undertaken to ensure sahur food distribution truly reached the intended targets and reached groups that have often been marginalised. In the Kampung Melayu area, one of the beneficiaries named Karim expressed gratitude for the attention provided. The man who works daily as a street cart operator conveyed his happiness about the sahur sharing activity. “Alhamdulillah, very happy and helped. It is rare that anyone pays attention to us during sahur,” he said briefly.

Meanwhile, Wijayanti, one of the executives at LAZ Gerakin who also serves as Treasurer of PB IKA PMII, revealed that this social activity was part of a broader series of Ramadan programmes. “PB IKA PMII holds communal breaking of fasts almost every day attended by more than 700 people at the office. Additionally, through Gerak Kita Indonesia, we recently also held care activities for Aceh and Sumatra,” she said.

Separately, Chief Executive of LAZ Gerakin Sandi Suwardi Hasan stated that the organisation was preparing expanded social programmes in the near future. “In the near future we are preparing a free mudik programme for routes from Jakarta to East Java and Jakarta to Medan. We hope the activities carried out will increasingly benefit society,” Sandi said.

Through this Jakarta Berbagi Sahur activity, PB IKA PMII and LAZ Gerakin hope that values of solidarity and social concern continue to grow within society, whilst strengthening the role of alumni organisations and philanthropic institutions in presenting sustained concrete action, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
