Path to Peace Opens: US-Iran to Meet in Switzerland This Week
The United States and Iran are reportedly preparing for a high-level meeting in Switzerland this week. The meeting is said to be part of a diplomatic effort to end the ongoing conflict, reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz shipping lane, and find common ground regarding Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Citing a report from French media outlet BFMTV, which referenced sources close to the negotiation process, the meeting is likely to be held on Thursday or Friday following the conclusion of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit. The talks are expected to take place in the German-speaking region of Switzerland, although neither Washington nor Tehran has yet issued official confirmation.
The plan for the meeting emerges amidst ongoing negotiations between the two countries. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei previously stated that a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US would not be signed in the near term, but could potentially be concluded within the coming days.
“The document will not be signed on Sunday, but it could be finalised in the coming days,” Baghaei said, while emphasising that diplomatic channels between the two parties remain open. Despite this, the concrete outcome of the potential meeting in Switzerland remains uncertain. It is not yet known whether the two countries will reach a formal agreement or merely hold direct contact to continue the negotiation process that has been underway recently.
Sources familiar with the discussions said preparations for a direct meeting between senior US and Iranian officials are ongoing. However, several questions remain, including the final timing of the talks and the prospects for achieving significant progress in the near term.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is scheduled to use the momentum of the G7 Summit to hold a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders. According to American officials, Trump will meet separately with the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, France, and India on the sidelines of the forum.
The Trump administration is reportedly optimistic that a deal with Iran can be reached. Several US officials believe the G7 member states have various instruments that could be used to support the implementation of an agreement if one is achieved soon. The G7 Summit, which brings together leaders of the world’s advanced economies, will discuss various strategic issues, ranging from international trade, critical mineral supply chain resilience, and artificial intelligence, to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
