Passengers Trapped in MRT Lebak Bulus Lift, Suspected Due to Power Outage
JAKARTA — Several passengers were reported trapped inside a lift at the Lebak Bulus Integrated Rapid Transit (MRT) station in South Jakarta on Thursday afternoon (9/4/2026).
The incident is believed to have occurred due to a disruption in the power supply, causing some station facilities to malfunction.
A video received by Kompas.com shows several people inside the lift. Two security officers can be seen holding the door slightly open to create an air gap.
In addition, staff prepared a fan directed into the lift to assist with air circulation for the trapped passengers. Mineral water was also provided to the MRT users stuck inside the lift.
“This operational disruption was caused by a power supply issue from the PLN (CSW) side, resulting in some station facilities, such as lighting, elevators, escalators, and several others, experiencing disruptions,” said Rendy Primartantyo in a statement on Thursday (9/4/2026).
He revealed that all elevated stations temporarily experienced a blackout, but conditions have now returned to normal.
“MRT Jakarta has taken swift handling and normalisation measures and continues to coordinate with relevant parties to ensure services can resume normally,” he stated.
Rendy added that on-site staff continue to monitor conditions and ensure services run smoothly. Further information will be provided periodically.
Nevertheless, Rendy Primartantyo did not provide detailed explanations about the condition of the passengers trapped in the lift.
“We apologise for the inconvenience; the safety of MRT Jakarta customers remains our priority,” he said.
