Passengers Permitted to Break Fast on TransJakarta Buses During Ramadan
PT TransJakarta (TJ) is permitting passengers to consume food and drinks to break their fast aboard its bus fleet during Ramadan 2026.
The policy was adopted to accommodate the needs of commuters who are still in transit when the maghrib call to prayer sounds at sunset.
TransJakarta’s Head of Public Relations and CSR, Ayu Wardhani, explained that the relaxation of the rules — which normally prohibit eating and drinking on buses — is intended to ensure passengers’ observance of the fast is not disrupted.
“We want to ensure that customers can observe their fast comfortably, including when the time to break fast arrives mid-journey. Naturally, we also encourage customers to maintain cleanliness and shared comfort,” said Ayu in Jakarta on Wednesday (18 February).
Although permitted, TransJakarta is enforcing a number of strict conditions to ensure other passengers are not inconvenienced.
Only light snacks allowed
Passengers are only permitted to consume drinking water and light snacks, not full meals. The duration of eating and drinking is also limited to a maximum of 10 minutes after the maghrib call to prayer.
Ayu also advised TransJakarta passengers to purchase food from retail outlets or tenants available at certain stops before boarding the bus. She further emphasised the importance of passengers being mindful of cleanliness by not leaving food waste on board.
On the operational side, TransJakarta has confirmed there will be no schedule changes during Ramadan. Services will continue to operate normally around the clock across 14 main corridors to facilitate the activities of Jakarta residents, both during working hours and at sahur and iftar times.
Previously, the isbat session held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs determined that the beginning of the fast, or 1 Ramadan 1447 Hijriah, falls on Thursday 19 February 2026.
