Passenger Numbers for Trains and Planes in Indonesia Slump in May 2026
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Railways were the mode of transport carrying the most passengers in May 2026. According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the number of railway passengers in May 2026 reached 46.96 million people. This figure fell by 2.73% compared to the previous month (month-to-month/mtm), but rose by 4.17% compared to May 2025 (year-on-year/yoy). Meanwhile, river, lake, and ferry transport (ASDP) carried 4.51 million people throughout May 2026. This number decreased by 3.88% mtm, but increased by 16.66% yoy. On the other hand, domestic sea transport was able to carry 1.65 million people as of May 2026. Compared to the previous month, this figure fell by 8.23% mtm, but grew by 6.45% yoy. Domestic air transport was recorded as carrying 4.11 million people as of May 2026, a drop of 10.11% from April 2026 and a plunge of 9.22% compared to May 2025. In contrast, international air transport was recorded as carrying 1.65 million people. This number increased by 5.98% from the previous month and fell by 6.41% from May last year. Compared to the others, only international air transport recorded positive monthly growth. βOn a monthly basis, there was a decrease in the number of passengers on domestic air transport, domestic sea transport, rail transport, and also ASDP. Only one, international air transport, experienced an increase,β said Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Ateng Hartono during a press conference at the BPS Head Office in Jakarta on Wednesday (1/7/2026). As for freight transport, the volume of goods transported in May increased on a monthly basis for domestic sea and rail transport. Goods transported by sea were recorded at 42.69 million tonnes in May 2026. This volume grew slightly by 0.39% compared to April 2026 and rose by 2.75% from May 2025. Meanwhile, goods transported by rail were recorded at 6.44 million tonnes, up 4.08% from April 2026 and down 0.99% compared to May 2025. Domestic air freight only carried 0.0496 tonnes in May 2026, a decrease of 0.6% compared to April 2026 and a plunge of 14.04% from May 2025.
