Passenger Bus Plunges into Ravine in Lahat in Early Morning, Police Conduct Emergency Evacuation
A passenger bus plunged into a ravine on the inter-village road in Tanjung Periuk, Gumay Talang District, Lahat, at approximately 02:30 Western Indonesian Time on Monday, 16 March 2026.
Nandang Mu’min Wijaya, Head of Community Relations of the South Sumatra Regional Police, stated that personnel in Lahat received a report through the 110 emergency hotline.
“Initial information regarding the accident was received by officers through the emergency service 110 of the Indonesian National Police after a resident reported the incident to the operator,” he said.
The report was immediately forwarded to field personnel. Shortly after receiving the report, members of the Lahat Police District moved to the scene to evacuate victims and the bus that had crashed into the ravine.
The evacuation process was conducted during night-time hours in a hilly area with steep and winding roads. Officers worked to ensure all passengers were safely evacuated from the scene.
Police are currently documenting the number of victims and identifying passengers aboard the bus. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the traffic unit.
He also urged the public to utilise the 110 emergency service if they encounter incidents requiring rapid police response.
Police appealed to members of the public with family members believed to be travelling on the bus to contact the Lahat Police District or call the 110 emergency line for the latest information on victim conditions.
The Head of the Lahat Police District’s Public Relations Section, Deputy Police Commissioner Mastoni, added that his office was continuing to investigate the accident in detail.
