Pasar Jiung Village Fire in Kemayoran: Residents Push Through Smoke to Salvage Belongings
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Victims of the Pasar Jiung village fire on Jalan Kemayoran Gempol, Kebon Kosong, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, evacuated their valuables to Jusuf Hamka Field on Monday (1/6/2026) evening.
Kompas.com observed at the scene at 11:45pm WIB that the vacant land commonly known as Jusuf Hamka Field was being used as an evacuation site. Residents from the residential area rushed to evacuate, carrying their valuables. Furniture such as mattresses, wardrobes, documents, and even pets were secured at the field.
Meanwhile, the area along Jalan Benyamin Suaeb was filled with merchandise from Pasar Jiung traders. They secured their goods out of fear that their stock would be consumed by the flames.
Tajudin, 46, a livestock feed trader at Pasar Jiung, said he deliberately secured his goods despite the fire being far from his stall. “I panicked. I had already gone home to Mangga Dua when I received a call about a major fire. Without changing clothes, I rushed here, fearing everything would burn,” Tajudin told Kompas.com at the scene on Monday night.
“I didn’t think about the fire’s origin; the main thing was to keep everything safe, as the tents behind the shops were also affected,” he added.
Meanwhile, Heni, a resident of RW 04 Kebon Kosong, Kemayoran, said she was exhausted after repeatedly retrieving items from her home. Initially, Heni had managed to evacuate to Jusuf Hamka Field.
