Pasar Jaya Urged to Implement Independent Waste Management System in Markets

Jakarta’s Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission B has urged the municipally owned enterprise Perumda Pasar Jaya to immediately implement an independent, technology-based waste management system in large-scale markets. Commission B Chair Nova Harivan Paloh stated on Wednesday that such a system would be far more effective in reducing the accumulation of waste at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Plant in Bekasi, West Java. He assessed that wholesale and large markets in Jakarta must begin adopting environmentally friendly waste processing technology, for instance by providing facilities to convert waste into compost or renewable energy. “They must truly have a technology-based waste management system and the Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) requirements must be fulfilled,” Nova said. He added that the output of independent waste management must have clear inputs and outputs, including reducing waste from upstream to downstream. “The current problem is that if we merely sort the waste and then send it back to Bantargebang, it is pointless. This means that after sorting, large markets must also have proper processing management,” Nova explained. The obligation for area managers and companies to manage waste independently is already stipulated in Gubernatorial Regulation Number 102 of 2021 concerning Waste Management Obligations in Areas and Companies.
