Pasar Baru assessed to have great potential for further development
The Pasar Baru area in Central Jakarta is considered to have great potential for further development as a hub of history, culture, and economy without erasing the historical roots and local wisdom inherent in the area.
Assistant for Economy and Development of the Central Jakarta Administrative City Secretariat, Suprayogie, stated that Pasar Baru is not merely a historic trading centre, but also a meeting space for various ethnicities, traditions, and cultures that shape Jakarta’s identity.
“As one of the cultural heritage sites and historic areas in Central Jakarta, Pasar Baru has great potential to be continuously developed without losing its historical roots and local wisdom values,” Suprayogie said during a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) themed “Pasar Baru: Simpul Jakarta” in Jakarta on Thursday.
He mentioned that the development of Pasar Baru needs to be formulated in an integrated manner so that the area’s cultural and economic potential can proceed hand in hand with historical preservation efforts.
The FGD, initiated by the Central Jakarta Culture Sub-agency, involved speakers, academics, practitioners, and stakeholders to gather ideas and input regarding the preservation and development strategy for the Pasar Baru area.
Suprayogie said the various ideas gathered in the forum would serve as material for compiling a strategic guidebook for the development of Pasar Baru.
“This book is expected to guide cultural preservation steps as well as the arrangement of the Pasar Baru area so that it is integrated as a sustainable hub of history, culture, and economy,” Suprayogie stated.
According to him, this arrangement can be directed to produce a historic area that retains its character while being able to develop into an attractive destination for the public.
“This revitalisation is expected to replicate the success of other historic area arrangements, such as the Blok M area in South Jakarta, which has now transformed into one of the modern iconic destinations,” Suprayogie said.
Meanwhile, Head of the Central Jakarta Culture Sub-agency, Andri Ferdian, said the FGD was part of an effort to explore the potential and various perspectives regarding the development of Pasar Baru.
He assessed that the area’s development is necessary so that Pasar Baru regains a strong appeal, both from a cultural and economic standpoint.
“The results of today’s FGD serve as input for the Central Jakarta City Government, which has been simultaneously discussing the revitalisation of the Pasar Baru area for the past two years,” Andri revealed.
