Party cadres urged to support Megawati

YOGYAKARTA: Secretary-general of the Indonesian Democratic
Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) Sutjipto called on party
cadres to stay united in facing increasing protests against
President Megawati Soekarnoputri's administration.

Sutjipto said there were attempts by Megawati's political
opponents to overthrow her by using sensitive issues, including
utility price hikes and the Oct. 12 Bali blasts.

According to him, Megawati's critics have frequently
criticized the President whom they say has no clear vision in
leading the nation.

Speaking at the party anniversary in Bantul regency here on
Sunday, Sutjipto added that protesters had demanded the
government cancel the utility price hike.

But after the government revised its decision, the protesters
urged the President to step down, he added. --Antara
