Partnering with Japanese Firm, Palu City Government Prepares Sensor Technology to Protect Infrastructure from Earthquakes
The Palu City Government is continuously striving to strengthen its disaster mitigation systems, particularly for earthquakes and tsunamis, through exploratory cooperation with Japan’s IMV Corporation. These efforts were discussed during a meeting between the Deputy Mayor of Palu, Imelda Liliana Muhidin, relevant Regional Government Agencies (OPD), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and IMV Corporation.
Following the meeting, JICA Project Advisor Ibrahim Djamaluddin explained that IMV Corporation is a Japanese company that produces earthquake sensor technology, or seismometer technology, which can be utilised to support disaster mitigation. “IMV Corporation Japan is a manufacturer of earthquake sensors. In this instance, we have approached the Palu City Government to introduce this technology and explore future cooperation opportunities regarding how to mitigate earthquake hazards in Palu,” he stated in Palu on Monday.
According to Ibrahim, the earthquake sensor technology owned by IMV Corporation serves various strategic functions, ranging from protecting infrastructure assets to supporting early warning systems for earthquakes and tsunamis. “The use of these sensors can secure infrastructure assets and provide an early warning system during earthquakes and tsunamis. Furthermore, this technology can provide clearer and more accurate data to support future spatial planning,” he explained.
Ibrahim added that the seismometers developed by IMV Corporation are capable of recording and collecting detailed earthquake data, which serves as a vital foundation for development policies based on disaster risk mitigation. Through this meeting, JICA hopes the Palu City Government will take further steps to open concrete cooperation opportunities with the Japanese Government. “We hope there will be action from the Palu City Government, meaning submitting a formal request to the Japanese side through JICA. We are ready to facilitate discussions with the Japanese Government,” he concluded.
This meeting is part of the Palu City Government’s commitment to increasing preparedness against earthquake and tsunami threats, given that Palu is one of the regions with a high level of disaster vulnerability. Through the use of modern technology and international cooperation, it is hoped that the disaster mitigation system in Palu will become increasingly robust and capable of providing better protection for the community and regional infrastructure.
