Partnering with Danantara, DKI Provincial Government Accelerates PSEL Project to Reduce Bantargebang Landfill Burden
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has forged a partnership with PT Danantara Investment Management to accelerate the development of Waste-to-Electricity Power Plants (PSEL). The project, planned for construction in Bantargebang, Bekasi, and the Tanjung Priok area in North Jakarta, is targeted at reducing reliance on waste management at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST). The cooperation agreement was signed at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Food in Central Jakarta on Monday (4/5/2026). “This is a contract with millions of Jakarta residents, that waste will no longer pile up, smell, and flood their streets again. Insyaallah in two years,” said Zulhas on Monday. Zulhas stated that Jakarta’s current waste generation reaches around 9,000 tonnes per day. The majority, or about 87 per cent, is still handled through landfilling at Bantargebang, which has exceeded its capacity. Through the PSEL project, waste will be processed into electrical energy or waste-to-energy, so it no longer just accumulates at the final disposal site. Meanwhile, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, explained that construction of the new PSEL will begin after PT Danantara completes the process of selecting the business entity. Following that stage, Danantara will determine the implementing partner that will carry out the project on the ground. In the future, the DKI Provincial Government will play an important role in providing waste raw materials and land readiness for development. However, not all development locations are regional government assets. The two locations prepared for PSEL construction are in Bantargebang and the Tanjung Priok area in North Jakarta. Through this project, the DKI Provincial Government hopes to gradually reduce dependence on the landfilling system at Bantargebang, while also transforming the waste problem into a source of electrical energy for the community.
