Parties may be barred from campaigning

AMBON, Maluku: Maluku General Election Commission (KPUD) warned eight political parties in the province on Wednesday that they may lose their right to campaign in the upcoming general elections.

"The deadline is Wednesday midnight, but up until Wednesday morning, the eight parties had not yet registered the names of their campaigners with the KPUD," said Idrus Tatuhey, the chairman of the Maluku province's KPUD.

"If they fail to meet the deadline, they will be barred from campaigning in the election campaign period from March 11 to April 1," Idrus said, referring to KPU regulation No. 701.

He said that if they ignored the measures and insisted on campaigning, they would be charged with violating election regulations.

The eight political parties are the National Mandate Party, the Freedom Party, Prosperous Peace Party, Pioneers Party, Prosperous Justice Party, the New Indonesia Alliance Party, the Concern for the Nation Functional Party and the Indonesian Unity Party. -- JP
