Partial Lunar Eclipse on 28 August 2026: Can It Be Seen from Indonesia?
The Partial Lunar Eclipse phenomenon will take place on 28 August 2026. However, this event cannot be witnessed in the Indonesian region.
Citing the official BMKG website, people across Indonesia will not be able to observe the Partial Lunar Eclipse of 28 August 2026 directly because Indonesia’s position is outside the eclipse’s visibility area. When the eclipse occurs, Indonesia will be experiencing morning to midday.
At that time, the Moon’s position is below the horizon (on the side of the Earth facing away from Indonesia). This Partial Lunar Eclipse can only be witnessed by people in most of the Americas, Africa, Europe, as well as Central Asia and the Middle East.
The entire process of this natural phenomenon—from the initial penumbral contact to its end—has a total duration of 5 hours and 38 minutes. The phases of the Partial Lunar Eclipse begin with:
Penumbral Eclipse Begins (P1) at 01:23:55 UT / 08:23:55 WIB (first contact of the Moon with the penumbral shadow);
Partial Eclipse Begins (U1): 02:33:48 UT / 09:33:48 WIB (first contact of the Moon with the umbral shadow);
Maximum Eclipse (MID): 04:14:04 UT / 11:14:04 WIB;
Partial Eclipse Ends (U4): 05:51:55 UT / 12:51:55 WIB (final contact of the Moon with the umbral shadow); and
Penumbral Eclipse Ends (P4): 07:01:41 UT / 14:01:41 WIB (final contact of the Moon with the penumbral shadow).
Although this phenomenon cannot be witnessed directly from Indonesia, BMKG urges those who wish to observe the Partial Lunar Eclipse of 28 August 2026 to watch the live stream via NASA’s official channel. BMKG also confirms that observing a lunar eclipse is fundamentally very safe to view directly with the naked eye.
A lunar eclipse occurs due to the dynamic phenomenon of the positional movement of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. During the full moon phase, the Earth moves to be positioned exactly between the Sun and the Moon in a straight alignment. This configuration blocks the Sun’s rays so that not all of them reach the Moon’s surface.
In the upcoming event on 28 August 2026, this alignment will cause part of the Moon’s disc to enter the Earth’s umbral shadow. As a result, when the eclipse reaches its peak, the portion of the Moon exposed to the umbral shadow will appear much darker in colour.
The umbra is the core shadow in the centre that is very dark because the projection of the Earth’s shadow completely blocks the Sun’s light. Meanwhile, the penumbra is the faint outer shadow that is brighter because the Earth’s shadow only partially blocks the Sun’s light.
