Parliament's Commission III to Hold Special Session on Acid Attack Against Andrie Yunus

The House of Representatives Commission III is scheduled to hold a special session to discuss the acid attack case against Andrie Yunus, a human rights activist and vice-coordinator of KontraS (Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence).

The session is planned for Monday at 11:00 WIB at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta, specifically in Commission III’s meeting room in Nusantara II Building.

Commission III is responsible for overseeing law enforcement matters and works with the police, prosecutors’ office, Anti-Corruption Commission, National Narcotics Agency, and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency. The session is expected to produce an official decision.

Earlier, Commission III Chair Habiburokhman strongly condemned the acid attack on the human rights activist and assured that the commission would monitor the case closely. Speaking in Jakarta on Saturday (14 March), Habiburokhman said his team had contacted the Metro Jaya Police Chief and urged police to move quickly in investigating the case and apprehending the perpetrators.

“We will ensure Commission III continues to oversee this case so that the investigation proceeds quickly and professionally. We are asking the state to fully cover the costs of the best medical treatment so that he can recover soon,” he said.

Yunus became a victim of an attack by unknown assailants who threw acid on him, causing injuries to his hands and feet as well as vision impairment.

The incident occurred shortly after Andrie finished recording a podcast at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office, which was discussing topics about militarism and constitutional review of the TNI (Armed Forces) Law.

Based on initial information gathered, the victim was riding a motorcycle on Salemba I Street, Jakarta on Thursday (12 March) night around 23:37 WIB when the attack occurred.
