Parliament Warns: WFH Policy to Save Fuel Should Not Turn into Long Weekend
The House of Representatives (DPR) has warned the government regarding plans to implement a work-from-home (WFH) policy for one day per week to save fuel oil (BBM) consumption. The DPR agrees with one day of WFH as long as it is not adjacent to the Saturday-Sunday holiday period, so it does not become a long weekend.
The Deputy Chair of the PKB Faction Group in Commission II of the DPR, Muhammad Khozin, reminded that WFH on Fridays has the potential to increase mobility at the end of the week. He is concerned that choosing WFH on Fridays could turn it into a moment of extended holiday.
“WFH on Friday actually has the potential to increase public mobility ahead of the weekend. WFH on Friday has the potential to turn into a ‘long weekend’ because it is adjacent to the weekend,” said Khozin on Wednesday (25/3/2026), quoted from detikNews.
Khozin also reminded that the WFH policy must target the intended goals. He does not want the WFH designation to instead increase BBM usage and public mobility. “Which means, the purpose of WFH becomes ineffective because public mobility remains high,” he stated.
A member of Commission II of the DPR RI, Ahmad Irawan, issued the same warning. WFH every Friday could be interpreted as a long weekend, potentially leading workers to misuse it for tourism.
“If WFH is implemented on Friday, that day has the potential to be used for tourism instead. The public could see it as a long holiday,” Ahmad Irawan told reporters on Wednesday (25/3/2026).
This Golkar Party legislator assessed that WFH on Friday would potentially deviate from the objective. He is worried that fuel savings will not be achieved because many people might interpret WFH as an extended holiday.
“Initially, we intended to save BBM usage, but that goal might not be achieved,” Irawan explained.
Irawan considered the proposal for WFH every Wednesday. He noted a tendency for employees to extend their holidays if WFH is on Monday. Meanwhile, for WFH on Thursday, he believes people might take leave on Friday, making the holiday span even longer. According to him, considerations from all aspects need to be studied by the government.
“Regarding the proposed day, actually WFH is most appropriate on Wednesday every week. The considerations are as follows: If on Monday, people tend to extend their weekend holidays. If on Thursday, people could apply for leave or holiday on Friday. So people could holiday on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,” Irawan stated.
