Parliament Urges Evaluation and Accountability for InJourney Following Ceiling Collapse at Soekarno-Hatta Terminal 3
The collapse of the ceiling at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has become a serious concern in maintaining safety standards and the quality of airport services in Indonesia. The incident, triggered by heavy rain, briefly caused panic among passengers, although there were no casualties and operations continued normally.
Member of DPR Commission VI from the Golkar faction, Firnando Hadityo Ganinduto, views this event as an opportunity for a thorough evaluation of airport infrastructure resilience, particularly in facing extreme weather. He stressed that airports, as strategic public facilities, must always be in safe and comfortable condition.
Firnando highlighted the important role of InJourney as the state-owned enterprise managing the airport, especially Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which serves as the main gateway for foreign tourists. According to him, the first impression of Indonesia is greatly determined by the quality of services and facilities at international airports.
“The quality of the airport must not only focus on appearance but also on construction strength. Weather factors cannot be used as the main excuse, because in the planning and construction, all risks, including loads due to rainfall, should have been carefully calculated,” he asserted, as quoted from a written statement received on Tuesday (7/4).
In addition, Firnando noted that comprehensive mitigation steps have not yet been visible post-incident, including from InJourney’s management. He emphasised the importance of transparency and responsibility in explaining the incident to the public as a form of accountability in managing state infrastructure, including statements from InJourney’s CEO, Maya Watono, regarding this event.
As a follow-up, DPR Commission VI will soon summon InJourney’s board of directors to request explanations and a thorough evaluation of the incident. Firnando affirmed that this step is crucial to ensure system improvements and maintain public trust in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport services.
