Parliament Schedules Meeting to Discuss Andrie Yunus-TNI Case and Fallen Soldiers
Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives, Utut Adianto, stated that legislators are seeking a time to hold a working meeting with Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. In that meeting, Utut said, Commission I of the DPR will discuss several current issues in the defence sector, such as the deaths of three Indonesian National Army soldiers while on duty in the peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon.
In addition, Utut mentioned that the meeting with Sjafrie will also address the government’s position regarding the acid attack case against Kontras activist Andrie Yunus, which implicates personnel from the TNI’s Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS).
“We are all grieving. Hopefully, there will be no more fatalities. And we must also address how to ensure that incidents like the acid attack do not happen again,” said the PDI Perjuangan politician at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Monday, 6 April 2026.
Utut conveyed the urgency of the meeting to reveal the facts of the events and the government’s plans for future policies. According to Utut, Commission I of the DPR is currently aligning schedules with Sjafrie’s agenda.
He believes that the difficulty in setting the meeting date is not due to Sjafrie’s reluctance, but purely because of his busy schedule. “But we can’t force it; we have to wait for his availability. His willingness in terms of time, if it’s the person himself, he’s certainly willing,” he said.
The state’s defence institutions are under scrutiny due to several recent incidents. An artillery attack resulted in three TNI soldiers being killed and five others injured. The first incident occurred in southern Lebanon on Sunday, 29 March 2026, which claimed the life of Chief Soldier Farizal Rhomadhon.
Then, three other TNI soldiers were injured: Private First Class Rico Pramudia, Private First Class Bayu Prakoso, and Private First Class Arif Kurniawan.
One day later, an explosion in southern Lebanon killed two TNI soldiers. They were Captain Inf Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sergeant First Class Muhammad Nur Ichwan. Two other soldiers were injured: First Lieutenant Inf Sulthan Wirdean Maulana and Private First Class Deni Rianto.
On the other hand, Andrie Yunus, who frequently criticises the TNI Law and the expansion of the military’s role in civilian spaces, was doused with acid while on Jalan Salemba I-Talang in Central Jakarta on Thursday night, 12 March 2026. Andrie was attacked with a dangerous solution by two unidentified individuals. The two rode a motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction to Andrie.
The corrosive chemical liquid hit the right side of Andrie’s body, such as his eye, face, chest, and hand. Part of the victim’s clothing also melted due to the acid. Medical examination results showed Andrie suffered serious burns covering 24 percent of his body. Andrie is currently undergoing treatment at the National Central General Hospital Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM).
Metro Jaya Police identified two suspects who threw the liquid, with initials BHC and MAK, as members of BAIS TNI. Meanwhile, four perpetrators according to the TNI version have initials NDP, SL, BHW, and ES, from the air and sea branches. NDP holds the rank of captain, SL and BHW are first lieutenants, while ES is a second sergeant.
