Parliament Reveals That Level Crossings on Railway Tracks Must Be Resolved: Safety Cannot Be Compromised!

Jakarta – Golkar Party faction member of DPR RI Commission V, Hamka B. Kady, has expressed deep condolences over the train accident in East Bekasi that occurred on the night of Monday, 27 April 2026. The incident resulted in fatalities and dozens of injuries.

He emphasised that transportation safety must be the top priority, particularly in handling level crossings, which have long been known as accident-prone points.

The incident involved the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek bound for Surabaya colliding with a KRL in the area of East Bekasi Station around 20:55 WIB. The mishap is believed to have started from a violation at the level crossing of Jalan Perlintasan Langsung (JPL) 85 on the west side of the station, when a taxi recklessly crossed without regard for safety and was struck by the train.

As a result, the KRL train on the track was forced to stop longer to ensure safe conditions. However, shortly afterwards, the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek, which was travelling behind, collided with the train ahead, triggering a larger accident.

“This level crossing has long been a concern for us. Resolving thousands of hazardous points across Indonesia is an urgent matter that cannot be delayed any longer,” Hamka stated in a written release on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.

He assessed that factors such as the indiscipline of road users and the lack of security systems at several points were the main triggers of the accident.

Therefore, Hamka urged the government to immediately take concrete steps, from installing adequate signage, improving security systems, to accelerating the construction of flyovers and underpasses to reduce level crossings.

“This is a collective homework. Public safety cannot be compromised,” he stressed.

In addition, Hamka called for a thorough and objective investigation to ensure the exact cause of the accident as a basis for evaluation and future improvements.

“The investigation must be comprehensive so that we can identify the clear root causes and prevent similar incidents from recurring,” he continued.

He also emphasised the importance of cross-agency coordination between the Ministry of Transportation, PT Kereta Api Indonesia, local governments, and law enforcement authorities in systematically and sustainably addressing this issue.
