Parliament proposes universities establish independent units to handle sexual violence
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of the House of Representatives Commission X Lita Machfud Arifin has proposed that higher education institutions establish special units that are independent and professional in handling sexual violence cases within the campus environment. “Victims are often in a vulnerable position, fearing stigma, social pressure, and even threats to their academic future. Therefore, the initial response from the institution is crucial,” she said, as quoted in Jakarta on Friday. This was stated by Lita in response to the alleged sexual harassment case involving 16 students from the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia (FH UI). According to Lita, the case serves as a serious alarm for the protection system in higher education. In addition, Lita assessed that campuses need to strengthen education for the entire academic community regarding the prevention and handling of sexual violence. She also emphasised the importance of synergy between campus parties, law enforcement authorities, and victim support institutions so that the handling process runs comprehensively. Furthermore, Lita reminded that campuses should be safe spaces for students, not exacerbating victims’ trauma. “Campuses must be places that protect, not ones that make victims even more pressured,” she said. She added that this case serves as a reminder that protection for victims of sexual violence is not only a legal responsibility but also a moral commitment for all elements, especially educational institutions.
