Parliament and Government Agree to Pass Domestic Workers Protection Bill into Law Tomorrow
Parliament and the government have agreed that the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (RUU PPRT) will soon be brought to the plenary session for approval as a law.
The level-one decision-making meeting was held at the DPR’s Legislation Body (Baleg), chaired directly by Deputy Speaker of the DPR Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, on Monday evening (20/4).
On that occasion, the government was represented by several related cabinet ministers, from Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas, Deputy Secretary of State Bambang Eko Suhariyanto, to Deputy Minister of Manpower Afriansyah Noor.
“Next, we request approval from the meeting on whether the results of the discussion on the RUU PPRT can be processed further in accordance with statutory regulations, if approved?” said Dasco, met with a unanimous response from the meeting participants.
“With approval, the RUU PPRT can be processed to be scheduled in the nearest plenary session, God willing, tomorrow,” he added.
The meeting was preceded by brief views from eight factions present on that occasion. In their views, all eight factions unanimously approved the RUU PPRT to be promptly passed into law in the nearest plenary session.
The Chairman of the DPR’s Baleg, Bob Hasan, in his presentation, revealed 12 points or provisions regulated in the RUU PPRT. Among them are legal protection for domestic workers.
Then, there are matters regarding recruitment schemes, education and training, protection of rights and obligations, to social security and health guarantees outlined in 12 chapters and 37 articles of the RUU PPRT.
“Thus, this is what the Working Committee conveys, and with the acceptance of the Working Committee’s work results on the RUU PPRT, the Working Committee’s task in discussing the RUU PPRT also ends,” said Bob.
Lightning-fast discussion
The government and DPR accelerated the discussion of the RUU PPRT in one day since the President’s Letter (Surpres) was received by the DPR on 15 April. The official discussion was only addressed today between the government and the RUU PPRT Working Committee at the DPR’s Baleg.
In the meeting broadcast live, the RUU PPRT discussion meeting was held for no more than three hours starting at 13:00 WIB.
Bob revealed that there were a total of 409 lists of problem inventories (DIM) discussed. Consisting of 231 fixed DIMs, 55 editorial DIMs, 23 substantive DIMs, and 100 DIMs that were deleted.
“All DIMs in essence have been resolved,” he said.
In accordance with the DPR’s agenda and schedule, the RUU PPRT is planned to be passed in the plenary session ahead of the closure of the DPR’s session period on Tuesday (21/4).
