A magnitude 6.2 earthquake that shook Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi, has caused damage to several parts of the building housing the regional Public Works, Spatial Planning and Land Affairs (PUPRP) office.

“Yes, the earthquake reportedly caused damage at the PUPR office, affecting the ceiling and walls of the building,” said Rivai, acting head of the Parigi Moutong Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), in a statement on Sunday (16/8).

According to Rivai, analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicated the earthquake was centred at sea, approximately 71 km southwest of Parigi Moutong, at a depth of around 60 km.

“The epicentre is estimated to be in the sea off Sidoan District,” he said.

Rivai said that following the earthquake, BPBD teams together with the local government were still carrying out data collection and assessment of the impact of the disaster, including any casualties or injuries.

“The team is still in the field collecting damage data. However, the earthquake situation has now ended,” he explained.

The earthquake occurred on Sunday (16/8) at around 00.25 Central Indonesia Time, and was felt as far as Palu City, Gorontalo Regency and Gorontalo City in Gorontalo Province, as well as North Bolaang Mongondow in North Sulawesi.
