Parents Question Stalled Reconstruction of Collapsed South Jakarta Primary School
Parents of students at SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09 Pagi in South Jakarta are questioning the continuation of the school building’s reconstruction after it collapsed in November 2024. To date, there has been no certainty, even though a construction proposal has been submitted and a field survey has been carried out. Parents also allege that the budget for repairing the collapsed school building was temporarily diverted to another school. “The first thing we found out was that the budget was being diverted to another school first, because there was a school that was said to be in a worse condition,” Evi told reporters at SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09 Pagi, Jakarta, on Tuesday. Evi admitted that this information was received around 2025. However, since then, parents have not received any further updates regarding construction certainty. Her hope that the damaged school building would be rebuilt soon has not been realised after nearly two years. One of the reasons they were given was information that the school construction budget had been temporarily diverted to handle another school deemed to be in greater need. Moreover, parents continue to question when the building that collapsed two years ago will be rebuilt. According to her, the school has conveyed that a construction proposal has been submitted to the DKI Jakarta Education Agency and a field survey has also been conducted. Nevertheless, there is still no certainty regarding the construction schedule. Currently, 274 students from grades 1 to 6 are still attending the school, a decrease from the previous 300 as many have transferred. The SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09 Pagi building in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, collapsed during the DKI Jakarta regional elections on 27 November 2024. Four classrooms and one School Health Unit room were affected. Heavy rain fell in the afternoon, causing the school building to slowly collapse. There were no casualties in the incident, but parents are anxious that the building could further crumble and endanger many people. Since then, parents have continuously sought clarity from the school, but no certainty has been provided to date. They hope the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will assist the school so it can be rebuilt to be better and more comfortable for the students, especially as Quran recitation activities have been postponed due to the incident.
