Strengthening digital literacy from a school-age level is a strategic step in building a safe and healthy digital ecosystem for Indonesian children. As a tangible form of academic contribution, ten students from the Master of Communication Science programme at Paramadina University, part of the ‘Bertunas Digital’ group, have collaborated with SMP Perguruan Cikini Jakarta to organise an educational seminar titled ‘Saring sebelum Sharing’ (Filter before Sharing).

The activity, which is part of the Digital Media, Communication, and Social Change course, was scheduled to take place on 5 June 2026 at the Multimedia Room of Perguruan Cikini, Jakarta. The seminar aims to equip students with critical and ethical thinking skills when utilising social media.

The organising committee chairman, Alfadillah, explained that this initiative aligns with government efforts to socialise Government Regulation (PP) Number 1s7 of 2025 concerning the Governance of Electronic System Implementation in Child Protection, also known as PP Tunas.

“We recognise that SMP Perguruan Cikini possesses best practices in supporting a healthy digital ecosystem. Through this seminar, we hope to strengthen the students’ digital competencies so they can be more prudent in cyberspace,” said Alfadillah.

The Head of SMP Perguruan Cikini, Sugeng Ependi, welcomed this collaboration, noting that digital literacy education is crucial for shaping students’ characters to filter information amidst the heavy flow of data on the internet.

Similarly, the Head of the Master of Communication Science Programme at Paramadina University, Juni Alfiah Chusjairi, emphasised that this activity is a real manifestation of community service. “Students are not only applying classroom knowledge but are also learning directly from societal dynamics and contributing to the world of education,” she stated.

The seminar was planned to be attended by 70 students and representatives of parents from the School Committee. To measure the effectiveness of the activity, the committee planned to conduct pre-tests and post-tests to track measurable improvements in the participants’ digital literacy. Furthermore, the results of the activity will be compiled into policy recommendations and scientific research to be published in national journals.

In the broader context of digital governance, the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, emphasised that PP Tunas (PP 17/2025) protects Indonesian children from the ‘4K’ threats in the digital space to create a superior generation. Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, highlighted new strategies for Indonesia’s digital platform governance, focusing on transparency, human rights, and the implementation of PP Tunas.
