Papuan People's Assembly Condemns Shooting of Smart Air Pilot and Copilot in Boven Digoel
The Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP) has condemned the shooting of a Smart Air pilot and copilot in Boven Digoel, South Papua, carried out by an armed criminal group (KKB) on Wednesday, 11 February 2026.
“From a human rights perspective, this is an unjustifiable act, and we strongly condemn the actions of the KKB in shooting the Smart Air pilot and copilot,” said MRP Deputy Chairman II Max Ohee, as quoted from Antara.
Additionally, Ohee said his institution also condemns the shooting of a civilian who was a water tanker driver in Yahukimo Regency on the same day, as well as the shooting of a TNI member in Mimika Regency that resulted in one soldier’s death on Thursday, 12 February 2026.
“This constitutes a serious violation of humanitarian values. We condemn these actions,” he said.
He explained that the presence of security forces and airlines in the region is to serve communities in areas that remain difficult to access.
“So they are actually not the enemy. Therefore, the KKB’s shooting of civilians and security personnel is inhumane,” said Ohee.
He added that his institution supports the efforts of security forces to protect the public and urged all communities to continue maintaining security.
Brig. Gen. Faizal Rahmadani said crime scene investigation results indicate that the attack and shooting on the Smart Air aircraft was carried out by 20 KKB members.
