Papuan People's Assembly
Papuan People's Assembly
From Tempo
With the promulgation of Government Regulation No. 54/2004 on
the Papuan People's Assembly (MRP), the provincial administration
of Papua is expected to set up this institution before long.
The MRP is an important body for the process of special
autonomy in the region. The Papuan community should therefore be
careful in electing representatives to the assembly.
However, the MRP is only limited to the function of
coordination and the contribution of ideas, without the authority
to make decisions. The final word remains in the hands of the
central government.
Still, members of the MRP should understand the main task and
function of this assembly because only in this way will
everything go in line with the message of special autonomy, and
hopefully meet the aspirations of Papuans for improved public
welfare.
