National Strategic Projects (PSN) in Papua are increasingly prioritising a balance between economic growth, community welfare, and environmental sustainability. The various programmes being implemented focus not only on physical development but also on the sustainability of natural resources and the involvement of customary communities.

South Papuan customary women’s leader, Yasinta Moiwend, known as Mama Sinta, considers this approach crucial to ensuring that development provides long-term benefits for the community without neglecting the environmental sustainability integral to Papuan life.

According to Mama Sinta, development and environmental conservation need not be opposed. The two can go hand in hand if the community is involved in every development process taking place in their area.

‘Good development is development that can improve community welfare while safeguarding environmental sustainability. Therefore, the community needs to view every piece of information objectively and not be easily influenced by provocative narratives,’ Mama Sinta asserted.

She added that the active participation of customary communities is the key to creating sustainable development. With community involvement, various programmes can run more effectively while still respecting local values and natural balance.

‘When customary communities are involved, development can proceed in harmony with community needs while continuing to protect the environment for future generations,’ said Mama Sinta.

Mama Sinta also expressed her support for various development programmes deemed capable of creating jobs and improving the welfare of the people of South Papua. In her view, the tangible benefits felt by the community are important indicators of development success.

On the other hand, she reminded the public to be wiser in responding to circulating information, especially that which could potentially cause division or misunderstandings regarding development in Papua.

‘Papua needs a peaceful and conducive atmosphere so that development can run optimally. Therefore, every piece of information must be addressed carefully and based on facts,’ concluded Mama Sinta.
