REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The Governor of Papua, Mathius D. Fakhiri, has begun implementing plans to open road access to remote areas of Mamberamo Raya Regency. The main focus is to reduce the isolation of residents who have long faced difficulties in accessing healthcare, education, and logistics distribution.

One of the priority routes is:

Dabra → Sikari → interior of Mamberamo Raya

According to Fakhiri, the request for road construction was directly conveyed by residents during his working visit to Kasonaweja on Saturday (16/5).

“Opening road access is an important step in reducing community isolation,” said Fakhiri in Jayapura, Sunday (17/5/2026).

Behind the Scenes: Residents’ Requests Directly Conveyed to the Governor

There is an interesting detail behind this project. During a meeting with the Forkopimda (Regional Leadership Coordination Forum) and residents in Kasonaweja, it was said that the community directly conveyed the difficult transportation access in remote areas.

Several villages are still: difficult to reach by land vehicles, relying on river transport, and requiring a long time to reach basic service centres.

The field visit is said to have allowed the government to see firsthand the actual conditions in the interior of Papua.

“By visiting the remote areas directly, we as the government can see and feel the community’s conditions firsthand,” said Fakhiri.

Not Just Roads, Airports and Ports are Also Being Prepared

The Papua Provincial Government is not only focusing on building roads. Fakhiri said that the government is also starting to prepare: optimising pioneer airports, developing air transport, and planning the construction of a port in Burmeso.

Existing small airports will be maximised for: community mobility,

distribution of basic necessities, delivery of logistics, and access to healthcare services.

Meanwhile, the construction of the Burmeso port is said to still be under discussion with the central government.
