Papua Provincial Government Accelerates 100-Hectare Rice Field Development in Waropen
The Papua Provincial Government is accelerating a 100-hectare rice field development and agricultural sector expansion programme in Waropen Regency as part of the implementation of the National Strategic Programme (PSN).
Speaking in Jayapura on Monday, Papua Governor Mathius D. Fakhiri stated that the initial planting took place in community-owned rice fields in Baino Jaya Village, Oudate District, Waropen Regency.
“The limited regional fiscal condition due to budget efficiency means that the local government must utilise national strategic programmes supported by the central government,” he said. According to Fakhiri, all provinces are currently facing similar fiscal constraints, necessitating that local governments capitalise on all national strategic activities.
Consequently, he noted, the administration is focusing on the agriculture, plantation, livestock, and fisheries sectors to serve as new economic drivers in Papua. “I am focusing on agriculture, plantations, and livestock. One of the focuses is this rice field development, which involves land clearing, revitalisation, and optimisation,” he added.
Fakhiri noted that Waropen possesses vast and fertile land, making it highly potential for agricultural development. He added that the necessary funding is available, provided that the Regent and the Head of Department execute the tasks effectively.
In addition to paddy, Fakherr is also encouraging the development of other commodities such as coconut, cocoa, coffee, cassava, and even castor beans as a source of renewable energy. He also reminded officials to ensure the continuous involvement of indigenous communities in every development programme in Waropen, stating that protection for the Papuan people is non-negotiable.
