Papua Pegunungan Government Drafts Regional Regulations Banning Tribal Warfare
The Papua Pegunungan provincial government has confirmed it is drafting regional regulations (Raperdasi) and special regional regulations (Raperdasus) to prohibit tribal warfare, aiming to create peace and tranquillity among tribes across its eight districts. Governor John Tabo stated that peace must be realised in the daily lives of all people in the Papua Pegunungan region. “We are drafting Raperdasi and Raperdasus that positively regulate the prohibition of tribal warfare in the Papua Pegunungan region. We are doing this so that there is no more tribal warfare in the Papua Pegunungan region and everyone can live in peace,” he said. “We hope that tribal wars or civil wars among mountain communities will stop. All tribes in this area are brothers and must live hand in hand with one another,” he added. He explained that under the Raperdasi and Raperdasus, before a problem is escalated to legal handling by the police, it must first be addressed in a customary court. He added that the drafting of the Raperdasi and Raperdasus concerning the prohibition of tribal warfare is being assisted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to help accelerate the legal regulation process. “These Raperdasi and Raperdasus are actually intended for three regions, namely Papua Pegunungan, Central Papua and South Papua, but we chose to create them first so that inter-tribal warfare in this area no longer occurs,” he said.
