Jayapura (ANTARA) - Papua Governor Matius D Fakhiri is preparing swift measures to address the flooding that has inundated Yoboi Village, Jayapura Regency, due to the overflow of Lake Sentani. “On Thursday (9/4), we, along with a delegation from the province and regency, inspected the affected locations from the overflow of Lake Sentani, including residents in Yoboi Village and surrounding areas,” he said in Jayapura on Friday. According to Matius, the efforts include clearing waterways blocked by wooden debris to quickly reduce the water flow. “In addition, we, together with the local regency, are conducting a detailed census of affected residents to ensure aid distribution is on target,” he stated. “Furthermore, in the education sector, several locations impacted by the flood are being addressed with solutions to keep the teaching and learning process running for affected students,” he added. He further noted that to anticipate worsening conditions, the government is also preparing evacuation scenarios, while urging the public to temporarily seek safer places. “Thus, coordination between the provincial and regency governments is being strengthened to ensure effective handling and minimise future flood impacts,” he said. He explained that the current westerly winds are exacerbating the situation by hindering water outflow from the lake. “The wind is blowing from the west, causing the current to flow back into the lake. This makes the outward push of water not maximal,” he said. In addition, his team conducted inspections at Muara Kaifuri in Yokiwa and continued to several other affected points.
