Papua Government Sees PNG Cooperation as Opportunity to Develop Medical Tourism
Jayapura (ANTARA) - The Papua Provincial Government believes that healthcare cooperation with Papua New Guinea (PNG) presents an opportunity to develop hospital tourism, which would benefit the health sector while boosting regional economic growth.
Suzana Wanggai, Assistant for Administration and General Affairs at the Papua Regional Secretariat, stated in Jayapura on Wednesday that the PNG government’s interest in Papua’s health facilities is a strategic opportunity that must be carefully prepared.
“We hope this cross-border health cooperation can be followed up immediately so that it provides benefits for both regions while supporting the economic growth of local communities,” she said.
She explained that a recent visit by PNG government officials to the Jayapura Regional General Hospital (RSUP) and Dok II Regional General Hospital (RSUD) received a positive response regarding both facilities and services, opening up opportunities for broader cooperation in the health sector.
“Therefore, together with relevant agencies, we will continue to make various improvements to enhance the quality of health services for patients from abroad, including preparing other supporting aspects,” she added.
She noted that patients coming from Papua New Guinea are generally accompanied by family members, which creates demand for various services such as transport, accommodation, and food during their stay in Papua.
“Indirectly, this condition will drive various local business sectors, ranging from small enterprises and transport services to the hospitality and culinary industries,” she said.
“If managed properly, the development of hospital tourism can strengthen Papua’s position as a healthcare service centre in the border region between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.”
