Papua chief prioritizes education
MANADO, North Sulawesi: Papua governor JP Salosa said he planned
to improve the quality of teachers and the universities in the
province, as part of making education his government's priority.
"If at all possible, teachers in Papua should have a bachelor
degree or at least a college degree," said Salosa in a seminar on
the empowerment of the Papuan generation in the North Sulawesi
provincial capital, Manado, on Thursday night.
The local administration had prepared masters and doctorate
study programs for the teachers, the governor added, but he did
not say whether that included funding for the programs.
It was also looking at ways of improving the quality of the
University of Cendrawasih in the capital city, Jayapura. "That
way, Papuan students no longer have to go to other regions to
pursue education, at great expense," Saloso added. -- Antara
